π¨ 30 Cats Found in Deplorable Conditions at Long Island Hoarder Camp
In a shocking case of animal neglect, 30 cats were rescued from filthy and dangerous conditions in a wooded area near Bethpage State Park, Long Island. The animals were living in cages filled with feces, without regular access to food or water.
Animal rescuer John Debacker described the scene as "quite sickening" and one of the worst he's ever seen. The discovery was made after local children stumbled upon the site while playing in the woods.
The cats, some visibly sick and dehydrated, were crammed—up to five per cage—and many cages were broken, exposing the animals to nearby traffic and wild predators.
The suspected hoarder, Thomas McDermott, a 29-year-old man believed to be homeless, allegedly told officials he was "trying to care for them." However, he is now under criminal investigation for potential animal cruelty violations.
All cats were transported to the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter where they are receiving medical care. Once stabilized, they will be made available for adoption.
Local authorities are still monitoring the area with trail cameras in case more cats are found wandering near the site.
