π¬ Fatal Shark Attack Shocks Sydney Surfing Community
On September 6, 2025, tragedy struck the surfing community of Sydney when 57-year-old surfer Mercury Psillakis was fatally attacked by a suspected great white shark off Long Reef Beach, near Dee Why.
Eyewitnesses reported that Psillakis had been surfing for about 30 minutes when he was attacked approximately 100 meters offshore. The shark caused catastrophic injuries, including the loss of multiple limbs.
Despite immediate rescue efforts by fellow surfers and lifeguards, Psillakis succumbed to his injuries on the beach. This marks the first shark-related fatality in New South Wales this year and only the second in Sydney since 1963.
In response, authorities closed nearby beaches and deployed drones and jet skis in search of the shark. The incident has reignited debates over shark safety, conservation, and ocean activity risks.
